Wade's Funds for Little Ones was created in loving memory of Wade Allen Smith
Wade Allen Smith was born July 24, 1995 to Jennifer and Brad Smith. Wade was diagnosed with leukemia in December, 1996. Despite the efforts of the staff at Texas Children's Hospital, repeated chemotherapy treatments and countless prayers, Wade lost his battle to leukemia less than one month later, January 19, 1997. Wade was only 17 months old.
Even though our stay in the hospital was brief, we learned so much in such a short time. We saw that Texas Children's Hospital could use new TVs, additional VCRs, new tapes for the children to watch and some rocking chairs for the moms to rock their babies in. We also learned that even a short stay in the hospital could be very costly, not just in medical bills but in personal needs, also. Things such as meals three times a day along with parking each day can really add up.
So our journey began; how could we honor the memory of our precious Wade, and help others at the same time? Wade's Funds for Little Ones was our answer.
Our organization raises money each year through our annual fall festival and donations from some very generous friends, old and new. The money we raise goes directly to help families that have children with cancer. We provide assistance in the form of paying rent, utility bills, purchasing parking cards, food coupons, repairing automobiles for transportation to and from the hospital, and the list just continues. When you have a child that has been diagnosed with a disease such as cancer, your thoughts are on your child and sometimes many are unaware of the financial burden that they could face during this time. The time off from work can be devastating enough, then families have to pay for parking, eating out, and gasoline to and from treatments, while in the hospital. We want to be able to help in anyway we can.
Over the years, we have encountered many that have so desperately needed our help. Knowing that we can help ease the strain just a little bit while keeping Wade's memory alive has helped our family survive the loss of Wade.
